Bipasha's Hollywood dream fizzles out

Just few days back there were tabloid reports about Bipasha Basu’s first Hollywood project starring Titanic villain Billy Zane, going on floors. But now news has trickled in that the project is being scrapped.

It was to begin shooting tomorrow on Saturday July 25th. It is learnt that Smita Thackeray who was to produce this film has now backed out with reasons being cited as personal and professional.

This yet untitled film was to be directed by David Silverman and was to feature Bipasha in Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft avatar.

This romantic thriller was going to be shot in Kodaikanal and had actor Rajvirr of Kaise Kahen (2007) fame playing Bipasha’s second love interest.

The film was to have Bipasha doing some intense love making scenes with both Billy and Rajvirr. Rumor mills suggest- the Rajvirr’s choice as the male lead wasn’t being appreciated and Smita Thackeray was adamant about him playing the role.

However now that Smita has backed out from the film, it only means that for now Bipasha’s dream of going international has come to a standstill, at least for now. Though for a long time now both Bipasha and her boyfriend John Abraham have been trying to go international but the plans are simply not working out.

Aishwarya to crack down on the false stories about her private life

Upset over "fabricated" media stories about her private life, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has threatened legal action against those responsible, a statement issued by her publicist said Thursday.

"Certain sections of the press have been behaving in a callous manner and have been putting together articles or pieces without any semblance of truth and furthermore they have been attributing quotes to the actor which are baseless and false.

Previously our client preferred to remain silent to let better sense prevail be it the news when she was married off to a tree or otherwise. This silence should not be misconstrued as a weakness, " the statement read.

The statement was issued to counter an article titled "Career more important than family" by a website where one of the quotes attributed to the actress read: "If I want to remain in the film industry then I need to stay fit", that implied that she will not have children. The article also stated that her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan was in agreement with her stand.

"She is one actress who never made any statements that her marriage can wait and she will focus on her career. When she did, she got her family's blessings and got married in the middle of a film and has been a thorough professional even after her wedding, " the statement said.

"We must not forget that besides being a star in every right Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is about a daughter, a wife, and a daughter in law, a symbol of our tradition and she has always believed and practiced values that govern our society. Irresponsible statements about her private life will not be left to grow without a strong rebuttal, " it added.

The statement also warned of strict legal action against those behind such stories about the 35-year-old.

"This may be read and understood in no uncertain terms that hence forth we would be forced to take legal recourse in any such event of a piece or article appearing without any credibility or which is an absolute fabrication of one's imagination...

We must respect Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for her stand to remain silent on such baseless rumors but it would be wrong to use her name to further a personal cause or career, " it read.

Sach ka Saamna is not just a great concept for reality TV but also a great motto to follow in reality. Truth hurts. And truth also sets one free from the bondage of guilt, shame and reproach. I find truth very fascinating and intriguing.

I love the idea of embracing truth not just occasionally but on a regular basis. It helps me avoid unnecessary entanglements and gives me a clearer perspective of life ahead.

Also, I truly truly believe that the best way to deal with the skeletons in our closets is to bring them out into the open (need not necessarily mean national television). When they are brought into the light, the adverse effects on us begin to nullify. That is the beauty of unveiling pent up emotions and reaching out to one’s inner most core.

The pseudo intellectuals of our society strongly believe that a reality show like this is not meant for Indian society which is perceived to have conventional beliefs.

I give a double thumbs up to the production team for bringing this ‘out of the box’ concept to India. After the first show, there were multiple reactions from various individuals from different walks of life.

Some criticized the idea of speaking the truth on national television, as they feared the truth might jeopardize human relationships and disturb the peace and harmony within society. Some raised questions on the authenticity of the polygraph tests. Some said it was just another attempt to raise TRP ratings. Nothing more.

I truly applaud the concept of the show. It is more entertaining than other reality shows where individuals are required to perform tasks. And when they fail to sustain the viewers’ interests, they resort to catfights and mediocre attempts of titillation.

Wherever truth goes, controversy follows. I understand the repercussions of speaking the truth on national television. The consequences might be totally devastating. Nevertheless, I prefer speaking the truth and facing the heat that follows to living in a web of lies.
I’m not suggesting we speak the truth at all times and with everyone. Life would then become humourless and quite complicated. We as adults should have the discernment to distinguish between and conviction and condemnation.

Truth that helps a person acknowledge his faults, weaknesses, shortcomings, character flaws is conviction. Truth that makes a person feels worthless causing deep shame, thereby leading to a very poor self-image is condemnation.

I strongly believe we all need to be convicted on a day to day basis so that we become better and more loving human beings.

At the same time, one must avoid condemnation in every possible way as it spreads negativity.

The bottom line is that I can choose to be truthful to my inner self or choose to lead a delusional life where there is deceit, lies, fabrication and eternal misery.

When Salman left Farah Khan embarrassed

Choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan says that Bollywood star Salman Khan had left her red-faced when he took her along for the auditions of his super hit 1989 film "Maine Pyar Kiya".

Farah recalled the incident when she came on the reality show "Dus Ka Dum 2", which is being hosted by Salman.

"He (Salman) took me along so that I could show him a few steps to do before director Sooraj Barjatya. But when Salman did the steps, it was so appalling that I simply picked up by footwear, hailed a cab and took off home, " said Farah on the show.

Salman, who started blushing after his secret was revealed, agreed that he did have two left feet then and later even demonstrated the step he was required to perform at the auditions, said a source from the sets of the show.

This particular episode will air Saturday at 9 p.m. on Sony TV.

A source reveals, “It so happened that in the breaks between his shots he went on to chat with the shopkeepers of Delhi’s Connaught Place area, where he was shooting.

He candidly asked them which films they were looking forward to watch. To his surprise, everyone one he spoke to named only one film– Love Aaj Kal. Aamir was left smiling.

It is not known whether Aamir passed on this message to Saif, but it seems like Love Aaj Kal is a sure fire hit even before its release!”

Another interesting bit of information revealed about Aamir by our source is that, Aamir finds it difficult to read the complete censor certificate as to how many reels the film is and also, what category has it been certified. He has been trying for years now, but still hasn’t mastered the art.

Shahid Kapoor reveals his ideal girl

Mallika Sherawat avoids nude shot again?

When we first saw the promos of Mallika Sherawat starrer Hissss, we got the impression that she has indeed given a nude shot in the film. There were sequences seen in the extended promo that showed a nude butt shot of Mallika sliding in the mud and turning into a deadly snake.

We were in fact the first ones to have reported about it back then. While it suggested it was her, we have now found out that it is actually a body double used instead of Mallika.

So what actually happened to this dare bare attitude girl who once shed all her inhibitions on screen?

It is learnt that when the shoot for the shot was going to take place, she requested to the film's director, Jennifer Lynch that she would not be able to do the scene and it would be better to use a body double. Jennifer perhaps understood her predicament and canned the shot with a body double.

But this hasn't been the first instance when Mallika has chickened out of giving a nude shot. Apparently, she was earlier supposed to do a nude scene in Mahesh Bhatt's Murder (2004) but when she reached the sets she developed cold feet.

Akshay Kumar looks after Malaria-stricken Deepika

If there was any doubt about Akshay Kumar's gallant nature the happenings in London in the past week have laid those doubts to rest.

While Deepika was laid up with a bout of Malaria Akshay not only made sure she was looked after he also persuaded her to stay away from shooting to rest while alternative scenes not requiring Deepika were shot.

On Saturday Deepika limped back to the set for a spot of shooting.

Deepika said from London, ‘I’m recovering. I was bedridden for three days And yes, I did return to the set on Saturday. I had to shoot. But I’m not sure whether it was the wisest of decisions, considering it was Malaria.”

Akshay has been a silent support system throughout this ordeal when Deepika found herself ill in an alien country without family.

No wonder Ranbir who kept constant vigil says Akshay is his favourite among all of Deepika’s co-stars. Not one to make friends easily Ranbir bonded effortlessly with Akshay when he had joined his girlfriend during the shooting of Chandni Chowk To China in Bangkok.

Says Deepika, “I’m lucky to be surrounded by gallant men. Whether it’s my dad, Ranbir, Akshay, Shah Rukh or any of my co-stars I haven’t so far encountered any ill-behaved men.”

Saif Ali Khan who plays Deepika’s cynical love interest in Love Aaj Kal also gets high marks from Deepika, though she admits they aren’t close friends.

In Love Aaj Kal Saif plays a guy who doesn’t believe in romantic love whereas Deepika is a diehard romantic both in the film and in real life.

Says Deepika, “He also believes in love and realizes it when he can’t do without the girl. So I guess there’s a romantic in all of us. It just needs to be tapped.

But you need to experience that journey from disbelief to love, like I have in real life. So many times I advice people on their love life. I can always tell the difference between those who understand and don’t understand the value of true love.”

Sanjay Dutt pooh poohs problems with Imran Khan

On his birthday, which falls on July 29, Sanjay Dutt feels very charitable towards those who have apparently not been kind to him.

Shrugging off stories of Imran Khan undercutting his role in Luck, Sanjay says, “Imran is like a little child. He was very respectful through the two films we’ve done together. He’s a good actor. I wish him luck and I want him to grow into an actor as big as his uncle (Aamir). Imran is too young to create problems for me.”

Sanjay says he did Luck for a lark. “I did it just to help Soham Shah. I really didn’t have the time or date. I told him to just cast me in a small role, which would finish quickly. In fact the role shaped up bigger than planned. As long as it makes some money and no one loses any, I’m happy.”

Hours before his birthday Sanjay is chilled out. But he has regrets about not being able to be near Amar Singh on his birthday. “I couldn’t even visit Amar Singhji because by the time the visa materialized the surgery was over.

My wife Maanyata was there. But I speak to him everyday. He’s out of the hospital now. He sounds better. I’ve seen his health deteriorate during the election campaigns.

God gave me an opportunity to look after my elder brother during the elections. I’m glad I was around. I can’t do ads or work within corporate sectors, because I am a convict.”

In retrospection, doesn't she feel surprised with the way media came down heavily on the film? Sighs Kareena, "But then isn't a film like Kambakkht Ishq an easy movie to criticize?

If one looks in the recent past, most Akshay (Kumar) films have seen a similar response from critics as well as box office. Look at Welcome or Singh Is Kinng; critics disliked them both but audiences had their own mind."

"I guess by working in films like Omkara or Jab We Met and a Golmaal Returns or Kambakkht Ishq, I am striking just the right balance.

It's okay when critics do not like Kambakkht Ishq or Golmaal Returns; there are some films that are made purely for the audiences and they succeed there.

Critics may be having an individualistic opinion while audiences always come together with a collective verdict. It's a matter of choice at the end of the day, so it's all fine", she reasons.

Coming months should be indeed exciting for her as it would be there for all to see if critics as well as audiences warm up to her performance. Starting with Qurbaan, she would also be seen in Main Aur Mrs. Khanna as well as 3 Idiots.

I don’t want any celebrations until Amar Singhji recovers. Once he returns to Delhi I’ll have a birthday celebration with him.

But I heard from the grapevine here that the unit of No Problem are planning a small get-together for my birthday. But when I asked them they said, no party. But my friends are flying down.

Who are they?
Paresh from Chicago.I’ve known him for the last 25 years. We’ve grown up together. Then there’s Mac from Los Angeles, another old and dear friend. Imran Ismail who’s here in South Africa. These are my three best friends who will be here on my birthday.

And from Mumbai?
Well I heard Bunty Walia is coming. Everything he does is announced on Facebook. So he has announced he’s coming for my birthday.

Tell me about your most memorable birthday?
They’ve all been memorable in their own way, even the ones that came in my worst days. I don’t like a big birthday bash. I just want my near ones on my birthday. It’s tough to remember my past. But I want to move on.

Have you invited your sisters?
Yes I have. I’ve invited them. The day I turn 50 is important for me. And I’d like my family to be near me. That’s the way my parents would’ve wanted it. I wish they could be here. But they’re busy with their own lives.

No matter what misunderstandings we had I’d like to wash them away on my 50th birthday. It’s sad they can’t be here. But I’m sure they’ve more important things to do.

It’s very difficult to imagine Sanju Baba being 50.
At heart I’m still Baba. But when I look into the mirror it’s a reality. And I do feel 50. But not old. I’ve been in the film industry for so long. Yes, it’s been a long innings.

I’ve been betrayed by so-called friends many times. But this time I feel I’ve found a true friend. I’ve known him for 16 years. He has always stood by me, always been there in the worst situations in my life.

Anil Kapoor and I go back a lomg way. He’s an old colleague and he just called me and asked me to. Look, you gotta be there for people.

How many people have been there for you?
Maybe nobody. But what do I do? I’m like that only. Only family and close friends matter. I know.

Your one birthday wish?

Everyone knows Karan Johar is remaking Stepmom with Kajol and Kareena Kapoor playing the roles done to ‘depth’ by Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts.

What no one knows is that the original screenplay is being considerably refurbished to etch out the Julia Roberts part so that there would be many more confrontational sequences between ‘mom’ Kajol and ‘stepmom’ Kareena.

The fact that Kareena happens to be a selfconfessed fan of both Kajol and Julia Roberts certainly helps the situation.

Kareena currently holidaying with Saif in Italy says, “When I recently got an award from Erin Brockovich I enjoyed the moment doubly because Julia Roberts had played Erin. I love the spunky militant parts she plays.

And Kajol is my favourite actress, and to be pitched against her is a dream come true We didn’t have that many scenes together in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. But here it’s the two of us all the way. Bollywood’s super-designer Manish Malhotra flew to New York two weeks ago when Kareena was shooting there, to discusss and finalize Kareena’s look for the desi Stepmom.

Kareena plays Saif’s wife and the mother of a child. She was earlier seen as a girl in love with a suspected terrorist in Govind Nihalani’s Dev.

She had blown the screen part in the two scenes she had.

“In Jehaad I’ve much more to do, plus Saif for company, ” she chuckles.

Aishwarya turns up at Amar's bedside

From Singapore to Chalakudy …. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan never had such a hectic schedule to keep up. On Monday another schedule of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan started in the distant hilly area of Kerala, just when Amar Singh whom Aishwarya was attending to, had recovered.

Illnesses in the family and at her work place have put Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s choc-a-bloc schedule under further pressure.

First it was her father and father-in-law who underwent health problems. Now it’s the Bachchans’ family friend Amar Singh whose kidney transplant in Singapore has further challenged Aishwarya’s schedules.

In fact scheduling setbacks caused by unforeseen health problems seem to be hounding Aishwarya. Two of her films both starring her husband Abhishek have fallen back due to illnesses.

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan has been pushed behind because of the director’s heart scare. Consequently a major chunk of Aishwarya’s dates went to waste, though it did give her chance to go on a holiday for her marriage anniversary in April…a holiday she could ‘ill’ afford.

Then the proposed thriller Crooked which takes her across the world for shooting with her husband, got postponed from mid-2009 to the end of the year as the director Abhinay Deo’s wife fell ill.Aishwarya willingly reshuffled the dates.

Says a close friend, “She can never be ruthlessly professional. If a project is in distress she will accommodate and reschedule it, no matter what it takes. There’re three delayed projects, none delayed because of Aishwarya.

But nonetheless requiring her immediate attention. She has already made space for the next schedules of Raavan and Shankar’s Tamil Robot with Rajnikanth which has also over-shot considerably and requires her additional dates.”
Aishwarya’s scheduling woes don’t end there. Raavan is a bi-lingual in Tamil and Hindi which means it takes double her time.

Says the friend, “Abhishek is in only one version of Raavan. Aishwarya is in both Tamil and Hindi. And she’s also speaking her own Tamil lines.”

Hence when the matter of the entire Bachchan family going for Amar Singh’s surgery came up, it was gently suggested that Aishwarya minimize or cancel her participation.

Says the source, “But for Aishwarya a family commitment is paramount. Work can wait. This is professionally her most crowded and difficult period ever. But she is determined to finish all her projects on time.”

“At least no one should blame me if any of my films are delayed, ”Aishwarya laughed before leaving for Singapore. She now travels from Singapore to Chalakudy in Kerala for the next schedule of Mani’s Raavan with no space to meet her loved ones in Mumbai.

I get depressed when people try to pull me down: Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor admits she gets upset when uncharitable remarks are made about her or her performance. Though the actress doesn’t mind healthy criticism, she isn’t amused when comments are made without any provocation or reason.

“I have realised over a period of time that the higher you go, more and more people will try to pull you down. I used to hear about this from my sister (Karisma) but am experiencing this first hand now. It isn’t really funny actually,” Kareena told.

Kareena was obviously referring to a section of the media coming down heavily on her since the release of “Kambakkht Ishq”.

“Well, the movie has released, done well and it’s time to move on to newer things. Critics had things to say about the film and it’s okay if they didn’t like the film. In any case, audiences had their own take on the film and they made the film a success. It’s all balanced out at the end of the day,” she said.

Some critics did feel that the “Kambakkht Ishq” content was too abusive at places.

“That continues to beat me,” she said in an amused tone. “Come on, it was just a movie. We were not developing any rocket science there. However, I guess some people did take it all personally and equated ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ to World War III,” said Kareena.

She can’t be immune to criticism though, isn’t it?

“Yes, I do tend to get upset and depressed when people try to pull me down. Sometimes it just comes from nowhere and you end up feeling that what did you really do so wrong to be facing such criticism.

“But then I understand that there could be a phase in one’s life when you get attacked from all corners. It’s fine because I know it will pass,” said the actress who is looking forward to the release of “Qurbaan” before year-end.

She is happy though that she has a loyal set of friends, family members and supporters around her who help her keep her chin up.

“And then of course there is Saif,” she perked up. “He has been around for so long and keeps me happy and smiling. Yes, there are detractors, but then there are supporters as well. After seeing Bollywood business closely for so long, I try not to take things too seriously.”

Her “Tashan” didn’t do well at the box office, but Kareena has had impressive releases over the last few years like “Omkara”, “Jab We Met”, “Golmaal Returns” and now “Kambakkht Ishq” doing well at the box office. In between, she also had a special appearance in another box office winner “Don – The Chase Begins Again”.

“Yes, thankfully it has been a nice run. I’m now really looking forward to ‘Qurbaan’, ‘Main Aur Mrs. Khanna’ and ‘3 Idiots’.”

Priyanka Chopra drags down Shahid in Dirt

When Shahid Kapoor rode pillion with Priyanka to shoot a song sequence in his Guddu avatar, little did he know that he will hit the ground and how!

Priyanka had to ride the scooter and Shahid was to sit behind her. The shot was simple enough; they just had to ride till about 15 meters.

However, it got complicated when Priyanka could not manage the balance of the two-wheeler. They did a couple of takes but the scooter seemed to not be in her grip, and as a result both she and Shahid went down with a thud on the mucky road.

Neither of them was hurt, as the speed of the scooter was slow. The unit hands came rushing to help them both, but this got difficult as both Shahid and Priyanka had, by then, burst into a fit of spontaneous laughter, much to the units chagrin.

Everyone joined in once they were sure that both the stars were safe and unhurt. However, the wet mud and dirt on the road didn’t go so easily and shooting had to be stopped for nearly an hour, while both the stars wiped themselves clean.

Amazingly enough, the next take of the shot was Ok. Shahid still teases Priyanka about his fall, as this is the only time in his life that he had ever fallen off a scooter.

Abhishek Bachchan responsbile for Raavana delay?

All through the year 2009, there have been speculations around Mani Ratnam's Raavana. While there have been talks about the film getting delayed, off late there were also mumurs around Abhishek Bachchan delaying the film further.

"That's far from true though", says a source attached to the film, "Yes, there have been delays due to some reasons or other but why would Abhishek cause any trouble to his own film? He is giving his all to the film and is least responsible for any delay whatsoever."

Though Mani Ratnam was unavailable for comment, it is a known fact that due to the film maker's health reasons, Raavana had to be put on hold for some time. However, now as he back and kicking, the film's shooting has also resumed.

"In any case, for Abhishek Raavana is special for number of reasons", adds the source, "He acknowledges the fact that two films that have got him most critical acclaim in his decade long career are Yuva and Guru.

The sense of respect for him as an actor came to him after these two films. Mani Ratnam is an integral part of his film repertoire and he is pushing himself harder for Raavana."

This indeed is true, courtesy the physical challenges that Abhishek has faced for the film. While in Yuva he was asked to put on weight, in case of Raavana he has been instructed to get a slimmer look. "He is enjoying it all though", the source comments.

Well, there is another 'obvious' reason why Abhishek is enjoying shooting for Raavana. He is accompanied by wife Aishwarya Rai in the film. Call it coincidental but Mani factor has played a big role in their association.

Laughs the source, "While in Guru they were dating each other, they are a married couple today and very much in love. This is a special film for Mani, Abhi as well as Ash and they are giving it all to make it an event in spite of all the delays."

Also starring Govinda and Nikhil Dwivedi in key roles, Raavana is supposed to be a modern take on 'Ramayana' with Abhishek in the role of 'Ravana'. However, some sources have negated any similarities. With music by A. R. Rahman, the film could well see an early 2010 release.

Health Woes: Abhishek-Aishwarya plans go haywire

It seems to be the season of health-based adjustments for Bollywood’s first-couple Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

First, an important schedule of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan got postponed because of the director’s health scare (it’s expected to resume any time now).

And now the thriller tentatively titled Crooked which Abhishek and Aishwarya were supposed to start this summer has been pushed to the end of the year, again for health reasons.

Director Abhinay Deo was supposed to start Crooked immediately after his directorial debut. However Abhinay who’s just wrapped up Delhi Belly for producer Aamir Khan has a seriousness illness in his family.

Deo’s wife has fallen ill, and the director suddenly needed to take time off to be with her thereby throwing the entire Crooked schedule off course.

The project could’ve gone for a toss considering how busy the lead pair is and also considering the fact that huge amounts of date adjustment would already be required for Mani Ratnam’s film.

The other choice was for producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani to replace the director.

However showing rare and heartwarming solidarity the producers and the lead pair decided to wait for the director to be emotionally capable of shooting the film.

Says producer Ritesh Sidhwani, “There was no question of replacing Abhinay. Crooked is his baby all the way. And we wanted to make it only with him. Fortunately Abhinay’s wife is now on the way to recovery. But he needs to be with her. Abhishek and Aishwarya have readjusted their dates. We now shoot in Greece, Istanbul and Thailand at year-end.”

Incidentally the film won’t be finally called Crooked.

“We need a good Hindi title. And we’ve told the film’s dialogue writer Anurag Kashyap to find one for us, ” says Sidhwani.

Will Katrina be Akki's Queen in Singh Is Kinng 2?

We all know that Vipul Shah is all set to come up with a sequel of Singh Is Kinng very soon. But very few of us are aware that he is planning to direct the film this time. For now the producer is busy with his Action Replay.

Our khabroo reporter informs, “He is very excited with the sequel of Singh Is Kinng and is just waiting for his schedule of Action Replay to get over. Alongside, he was talking to Akki about directing SIK 2 himself.”

“As we all know even Akki is eager to start with the film. The only question that now remains- will Katrina be part of it. Well the production is planning to approach her, but nothing has been finalized as of now, ” adds the source.

Let’s have a look into her journey from Germany to Bollywood..

Any formal training in acting?
Three years of acting training under the guidance of Heidelotte Diehl, a well-known TV, movie and stage actress. She recommended a course in Berlin with Susan Batson, who came over from America to conduct a two week intensive workshop (Susan Batson worked with many of the big names in Hollywood like Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts)

Recently your Lavani Dance Number in the Marathi movie Gallit Ghondal, Dillit Mujra became a sensation. How come you fitted so well into the movie and could dance it so well?

My formal classical ballet dance background helped immensely plus the full conviction of my director Nagesh Bhosle plus the whole team (choreographer, co-actors, DOP) made it possible for me to do it.

With lip-synch and the dance movements I could do it in two days. I even performed at Andheri Sports Complex as part of a Marathi show; I really loved it, as a live audience is something special…

Being a German your English is very good and your Hindi is surprisingly better than any other non-Hindi speaking Indian actor…How come?
Guess languages are my forte. As for my Hindi, I had the same teacher that taught the likes of Katrina Kaif and Yana Gupta. He specializes in bringing you very fast on a reading, writing and speaking level.

Languages are your forte?
Yes, I also speak French, conversational Italian and Spanish.

So it would be safe to say you would be open to act in other Indian languages?
Definitely! Where in the world can you act in another language, in another culture and still be in the same country? I find it intriguing, and I found that working in a Marathi movie gave me the feeling of a new place even though I was just 50 km away from Pune…so it would be indeed very interesting to maybe act in a Telugu picture.

Great! What are your current assignments?
On serial front, I am doing Contiloes “Jhansi Ki Rani” for ZEE TV. My next movie project, which also I am very happy about is- an Anil Kapoor Production, Director Anees Bazmee opposite Paresh Rawal. It is a comedy called “No Problem” and being shot in South-Africa.

And hopefully Makarand Deshpande’s movie “Shah Rhuk Bola Khobsurat Hai Tu”, where I’m playing a very important character, is ready for release, as Mac just finished shooting the missing portion with Shah Rukh.

You have done so much diverse work here and still going strong. How come you haven’t got a lead role yet?
You have to have someone like Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir, Saif or equally famous to pull you along.

But you worked with Aamir Khan?
In an AD- TITAN AD! Ad’s have a very strong star impact, and if you work with a big star like Aamir people are bound to look at him, not you. And I was playing a character, a French artist so audience was seeing the character not Suzanne Bernert. (smiles)

While Aamir was Aamir, the ‘STAR”. I am an actor, I change with every character, but that can be a problem as well. Being a foreigner it’s like a friend of mine always says…two beautiful white horses. Don’t ask me which one is Geeta and which one is Seeta. For many people, we look all the same and they are so many junior artist and dancers now in India marketing their color and sex appeal.

So every time I am meeting people I have to cross the hurdle of making them understand who I am, and what work I have done. And that I am not selling my skin nor my body but the full package of a talented actress and glamour.

Definitely don’t want only my breast to talk to the audience as, one of a very fine actresses here once said. I’m here to sell my complete talent as an actress which requires charm, glamour, sensuality, dancing (my oxygen and intoxication) and dignity.

Regarding lead parts; I guess production houses want foreign actors, but are confused how to use them. It’s time for “Globalisation” which India foresaw ages ago with the idea of, ‘VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBAKAM ’ but yet trying hard to make a film for all.

I’m just talking about my being here and knowing that, up to now whatever I have done has been fine according to the given situation. But what is in store for us who are and want to stay here.
Take the example of Kalki Koechlin, who has done a fantastic job in Dev. D. but I wonder what kind of scripts she is getting nowadays. We are actors… not like the person you see on screen at all. That is the allure of being an actor. Not to be you! To slip into someone else’s skin and be that person.

Any other plans?
Yes, I just finished my English script and it is registered here at the writer’s association. I got a very good actor who lives in America and is willing to come and shoot, give his music (he is a musician as well) all on a shoe-string budget.

My partner just finished writing his Hinglish comedy where I have one lead part and now we are looking for a producer who is willing and able.

Both the movies are low-budget, and I mean low… but the scripts are strong, qualitative which will allure audiences. I am confident that I will find the right person.

How did you landed up with Kaminey?
When I met Vishal he said- Shahid I want to do my version of a commercial film. He made me hear 2-3 concepts and finally, he said about his favourite concept- twin brothers with speech defects. One stammers while the other one has lisp.

I found this concept to be very exciting, as two actors talking in such a manner can be very interesting and at the same time, it can win them sympathy. Vishal said that he is trying to attend to the genre, which is of a caper, or a pulp film, that has never been touched in Indian cinemas.

Why the title Kaminey?
Even I asked him (Vishal) the same question. He felt that this title represents each and every character in the film. Everyone is fast and naughty. There is a bit of negativity in each one of us in the film. Nobody is totally innocent.

What is the USP of the film?
The speciality of this genre is that, on one side, it’s very real, but at the same time it’s high on glamour and entertainment.

There is a story which has been incorporated in the film, the experience of Guddu that is shared with Sweety in the movie. This happened due to some situation during his childhood and for more you need to wait and watch the film.

Some part of it is taken from real life, which was narrated to me and Vishal. We were so moved by the story. We have tried our best.

How important is this film for you, and what kind of expectation you have from it?
I am very hopeful that audience do appreciate this film, because this is a very different film for me and Hindi Cinema too. This film is very important for me because it took lots of gut for me to do this. Though it is in commercial format but the presentation, music, the look of Charlie, etc... I have never worked on that space.

Do you think audience will accept you in this avatar?
Audience have seen me in Jab We Met, Vivaah, Kissmat Konnection and they are used to see me like that, a romantic boy kind. A new door will open for me if people accept this film and my character. Also, this will give a new format of entertainment to the Indian audience.

There are movies like Lagaan, Chak De India, which are based on different subject and we do need to have such kind of films.

Personally I feel our creative space is very limited, and the more we can open-up, the better it will be for our industry. I feel inspired to do such films. This builds the confidence in us that audience is ready to accept different kind of movies, but only when it is presented well and can connect with them.

Is it risky to play such character after Jab We met?
Yes, it has a flip side to it. If it goes wrong it will be considered a mistake, and if it goes right it will be a huge success. Audience like being surprised, but if you surprise them in a very terrible way then they will not enjoy it.
It was a challenge but we are happy with the response the promos are getting. It was obvious that the first promo will decide the fate of the film, and fortunately it did get a good response. The struggle was to do it in a way which can convince the audience.

What kind of preparations you have done for your characters? How easy or difficult it was for you to switch from one to another character?
For this I had to work a lot especially on my body for a year. The stammering of Guddu is very difficult and we wanted to make it look real, not a caricature.

As you all know Vishal is very particular about such details and thus together we met many ENT specialists, speech therapist to know how a stammer talks, what is the process, technically and mentally.

We also met some people who have problem of stammering in the special club made for them at Bandra. Alongside I had to work on my body a lot for a year and so, had to sacrifice on food too.

Talking about switching between the characters- both the character we shot simultaneously at the same place. To go from one character to another was very difficult as, one would say Fa while, other would stammer.

How was it to work with Priyanka?
On one hand I felt that she is a good actor before doing the film, but after it, I discovered- she is an excellent actor. I feel she is right now at a creative high with doing the best performances of her career. It was challenging for both of us.
I applaud her for that because she had a new character to play, as she plays a Maharashtrian character. The experience of working with her was very accelerating and she brings lot of positivity on the sets.

She is a team player which is very important for an actor. You can make out that she is there to do a good film, not just to do roles.

There had been talks about you seeing Priyanka and then later it was reported that you broke up?
Ahh! Why can’t you people stop talking about it... I just know one thing that I don’t need to clarify what it was and what it is, as I have been linked up with all my co-actors; but that doesn’t mean that I am seeing all of them.

It was heard that Vishal has approached Saif Ali Khan for this role?
That’s something you should ask Vishal, as I am not here to clarify anything on his behalf. Its fantastic role and I don’t believe that anyone can say no to it.

She is one of Bollywood's leading actresses and turns 27 Saturday. But Priyanka Chopra says she is not a party animal and would like to just have a quiet birthday with her near and dear ones.

"I'm not a big party person and I don't like throwing parties at all. So this time a lot of my family members have decided to fly down to be with me, " Priyanka told over e-mail from Mumbai.

"It's likely to be a day spent doing nothing in particular - just hanging out with the people who love me and want to be around me to make my day special. That's all, " she added.

Priyanka has had a fulfilling year with two hits "Fashion" and "Dostana", which fetched her lots of awards.

She is entering a new year in her life, but hasn't set any goals for herself.

"I've never set any goals for myself. I've always been destiny's child and destiny has always looked after me. I think someone up there always manages my life and does what's best for me. So I just leave it up to Him. I just work hard at what he sends my way, " she said.

Currently, Priyanka is busy shooting for Yash Raj Films' "Pyaar Impossible" along with Uday Chopra and Dino Morea.

We catch-up with Saif Ali Khan who is quite nervous on his debut as a producer, and gets chatty on his production venture Love Aaj Kal and of course girlfriend Kareena. Are you satisfied with your maiden production venture? Have you given it hundred percent?

Right now, I am nervous since I am newcomer as a producer. Everything is a result of your decision; nonetheless, it has been a different experience.

As a producer you are never satisfied, you want more and more but we have taken care of every detail and it has been organized well. We have had a great team, and I have learnt a lot in the process.

My partner Dinesh Vijan has been a great help. I was more involved in the creative aspect of the film. But it has been an exciting journey. Many of your contemporaries have already become producers; did you take tips from them?

I think I have been fortunate in working with few great producers and big established banners. I have learned a lot of things from friends like Yash Raj Productions and Dharma Productions.

As for my friends Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar would have been happy to advise me. We tried our best but, I haven’t really called anyone. What made you turn producer? My interest is really not in production but after 18 years, you like to own and be creatively on your own.

A lot of money is involved and your inputs mean something else. I want to learn more about business. The market earlier was different. Most heroes have moved on and turned actor directors or producers.

There are not many independent producers left to work with. Reportedly Kareena wanted to play the lead opposite you in LAK? None of the directors listen to me.

Imtiaz felt that Deepika suited the role better. You are working with Deepika for the first time how was it? I think we look nice and refreshing. She’s a new face and she’s young.

She’s got an Indian look and is very grounded and mature. Her personality grounds me on the screen just like Rani Mukherjee does. They are very earthy just opposite of me. What is Love Aaj Kal about?

The story primarily is about Jai who doesn’t believe in love and is practical. He believes that long distance relationship is a pain, so why not just be friends and don’t follow your heart types.

He comes across a person who tells him what love is all about. Imtiaz has made a simple love story and it is not confusing love story as most people believe.

You are playing a Sardar in the film and Akshay and Salman have played Sardars before, what is your opinion about them? I think we are different. I have not seen Salman’s film but I saw Akshay in Singh is King and I think it was glamorous and commercial. It was cool, stagey and larger than life. It’s unfair to compare us.

Aey Ganpat Chal Daru La (Shootout at Lokhandwala)- Shootout at Lokhandwala has all the important components in it to make big at the box-office. However, music again got its audiences head over heels to watch the film and make it a big success.

‘Aey Ganpat Chal Daru La’ became one of the unique selling points and in-fact is the most stylish tracks till date composed in B-Town. Maya Dolas (Vivek Oberoi) along with his team of rogues put life in the song.

However, the song got its grace with Mika’s voice. Mika not only did sing but composed the music as well. ‘Aey Ganpat Chal Daru La’ got a fantastic shelf space in many discos and pubs across India.
Masakalli Masakalli (Delhi 6)- One of the top charters of by gone year, this track gave a real boost to singer Mohit Chauhan’s career.

Nevertheless, it has to its credit a lovely recognition of Sonam Kapoor now referred to as the Masakalli of B-Town. The beautiful comparison of Sonam’s character with free pigeon gives this song an extra-mark for its stylish lyrics.

Sahi Bolta hai (Ankhen)- ‘Khane Ka Hai chickens curry...jeb mein tere dus rupaiya...peele kuting Khale Bajiya…sahi bolta hai’. This track had touched the chords of one and all with terrific comic-timing.

Three poor blinds consoling each other for good times to come was the theme of the song shot and sung beautifully. The beauty of the song was that everyone could relate with the lyrics at one point of time in their lives.

Although Aankhen did fetch its share of success in the midst of biggest hits in that year, but ‘Sahi Bolta Hai’ is still one of the on-tip-of-the-tongue numbers of the industry.

Oh hum dum suniyo re (Sathiya)- This foot-tapping number with a tinge of rap in it makes many a hearts go flutter even now. It broke the ice by changing the mindset that romantic songs need not be melodious.

The song oozed out the maximum style with Vivek Oberoi humming to the tunes. K K became star-singer overnight. Oh Humdum…made its mark and till date has got its fans around humming.

Dol Dol (Yuva)- With this one, A R Rehman took everyone to the planet of trance. The instrumental theme piece takes the much-appreciated story of the Yuva further.

Shaheen Badar fantastic vocals added another feather in the cap of the song. The lyrics had loads of oomph factor which lured everyone to listen to it. Again, the film did get much recognition but music was the high point.

They have given a series of hits together like "Aankhen", "Raja Babu" and "Partner" and they have teamed up yet again to entertain audiences with "Do Knot Disturb". Comedy King David Dhawan says he shares a great camaraderie with funny man Govinda and that they are lucky for each other.

"We have a very good understanding and complement each other pretty well. It has become very easy to work with him because he knows what exactly I want from him and he delivers that perfectly, " Dhawan told in an interview.

Is Govinda lucky for you?

"I'm very lucky for Govinda and he has been lucky for me as well, " the filmmaker said jokingly.

"On a serious note, I would say that he (Govinda) is like a spoilt younger brother whose funny bone was discovered by me. In fact, it was through my movies that the comedy tag started to follow him."

The talented director, who has been in the industry for more than three decades, has directed around 40 films like "Shola Aur Shabnam", "Saajan Chale Sasural" and "Deewana Mastana".

He also gave comedy buffs the hit 'No.1' title series that included movies like "Biwi No.1", "Jodi No.1", "Hero No.1" and "Shaadi No.1".

Dhawan says he was never superstitious about 'No.1', but when one film with the 'No.1' title word clicked, he decided to use it for other projects as well.

"Call it luck or superstition, but all those films fared pretty well at the box office and I followed the trend for a while, " he said.

The director also gave Bollywood a hit on-screen couple in Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, who worked together in several blockbusters - "Raja Babu", "Coolie No.1", "Saajan Chale Sasural" and "Hero No.1", to name a few.
Dhawan says he would love to work with them again but only if there is a suitable script.

"Karisma and me are the judges of a reality show and there she told me that she wants to come back. She has been telling me this for years now, but I'm sure if I have a good script, she wouldn't say no to me.

"Together they (Govinda-Karisma) share great chemistry and make a very good on-screen couple. I know audience wants them back, but they will have to wait till I find a good script, " said the director.

The director is very happy making laughathons and says making a comedy is an art.

"Making people cry is very easy, but tickling their funny bones and making them cry out of sheer laughter is an art. I call myself an entertainer whose sole aim is to entertain audiences. I don't think I'll ever make a serious film, it is not my forte, " Dhawan said.

Dhawan's upcoming "Do Knot Disturb" is again a light-hearted romantic comedy that stars Govinda, Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen. It is scheduled for a September release.

Another project of his is "Hook Ya Crook", which stars John Abraham, Kay Kay Menon, Shreyas Talpade and Genelia D'Souza.

'Gay penguins' rear adopted chick‎

The zoo, in Bremerhaven, northern Germany, says the adult males - Z and Vielpunkt - were given an egg which was rejected by its biological parents.

It says the couple are now happily rearing the chick, which has reached four weeks old.

"Z and Vielpunkt, both males, gladly accepted their 'Easter present' and began straight away with hatching the egg," said a statement from the zoo.

"Since the chick arrived they are behaving in the same way as one would expect a heterosexual couple to do. Both happy fathers are now diligently handling the everyday care ... of their adopted offspring," the zoo said.

Z and Vielpunkt are part of a six-strong gay community among the zoo's collection of endangered Humboldt penguins who rose to fame in 2005 when four Swedish females were brought in an unsuccessful, and controversial, attempt to "cure" them.

Three pairs of male penguins had been seen attempting to mate with each other and trying to hatch offspring from stones.

"Homosexuality is nothing unusual among animals," the zoo said. "Sex and coupling up in our world do not necessarily have anything to do with reproduction."

The Humboldt penguin is normally found on the coast of Chile and Peru, but numbers have dropped to between 12,000 and 20,000 as industrial fishing methods have led to dwindling stocks of the anchovies on which they feed.

There have been previous reports of exclusive male-to-male pairings among penguins, some of which have also included the rearing of chicks.

Other animals may simply exhibit a "drive to mate", while others may, like humans, enjoy non-procreative sexual activity.

Was 'Kill Bill' star David Carradine murdered?

David Carradine's wife and his manager disputed suggestions that the actor's death was a suicide, while a source in Bangkok, Thailand, said the actor's neck and genitals were found bound with rope.

Carradine, 72, became famous in the 1970s, when he portrayed the traveling Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine in the television series "Kung Fu."

Bangkok police said Carradine was found hanging by a nylon rope in a Bangkok hotel room closet Thursday morning.

A member of the emergency crew who was called to the hotel after a maid found Carradine told CNN that a yellow nylon rope was tied around the actor's neck and a black rope was around his genitals. The source asked not to be identified.

"I do not know if you want to call it accidental," Chuck Binder, Carradine's manager, told CNN's Larry King on Thursday. He said Carradine's career was on a roll and his life was on a resurgence.

Binder said a producer of the movie, "Stretch," which Carradine was to act in, called him from Thailand to tell him what was happening there.

"I do not want to get in the middle of this whole investigation, but this guy said to me for sure there was foul play," Binder said.

Actor Michael Madsen told King that the one thing Carradine's wife, Annie Bierman, wanted everyone to know is, "David was not suicidal."

Investigators found no sign of a forced entry into Carradine's room, Bangkok Police Lt. Colonel Pirom Chanpirom said.

An autopsy was being conducted at a Bangkok hospital, but no results would be available for another day, Chanpirom said.

Modern audiences may best know Carradine as "Bill" in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films. He earned a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for his role in the second movie in the two-part saga.

Carradine's career included more than 100 feature films, two dozen television movies, and theater work, according to the Internet Movie Database.

"He was clearly an actor who followed his own path," said Leah Rozen, movie critic for People magazine.

He was never a guy who talked a whole lot. You knew, as an actor, the characters he played, you knew they had a past, you knew there was probably some unhappiness there, but he wasn't going to talk about it."

Carradine was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as folk music legend Woody Guthrie in the 1976 movie "Bound for Glory," according to a biography on his official Web site.

He also made appearances in television series such as "Gunsmoke" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." His first starring role in a series was as the title character in "Shane" in 1966.

Carradine was married five times and divorced four, according to People magazine.

He was the son of John Carradine, a character actor who appeared in hundreds of films, plays and television episodes.

"David's career as an artist did not begin on the stage, though some of his early career was on and off Broadway. His earliest work was as a sculptor and painter," Carradine's official Web site says.

The site also includes an "Art Bio," in which the actor opened up about his life.

"I've always had an especially hard time with everything I've tried to do," Carradine wrote.
